Glenn County Gold ... and More!

It's been another busy event season, and we are just catching our breath.  Most noteable of our 2013 accomplishments was the Glenn County exhibit at the California State Fair.  This year's theme was "Glenn, Land of Milk and Honey," with the central focus of the exhibit being a giang bee skep that house a museum of bee facts and artifacts.

When the points were tallied, and the votes were in, Glenn County received the prestigious "Best of Show," together with a Gold Rosette, "Best Marketing," and much to our surprise, the "People's Choice" award for receiving the most votes by fairgoers in 2013!

Once again, many thanks to the many people who were a part of this project, and to the County of Glenn for its continuing support!

Arabian Nights Finished Product

What a fun project!

Party Dogs was honored to have been included in this year's Cancer League Ball at the Redding Holiday Inn with chiavari chairs, custom linens and a unique custom-designed metal architecture centerpiece.

When envisioning a themed table for the "Night of a Thousand Lights" theme, our client envisioned something very dramatic and exotic -- "Arabian Nights" was the pick.  With little more than a week to make the vision come to life, Party Dogs "wizard" Clint jumped right in there to construct the structural components that would make my sketches a reality.  Using a beautiful green glass vase found in Party Dogs' massive rental inventory, and some very exotic lanterns, a brightly colored, beaded ribbon table skirt, crushed bichon linens and gorgeous amber leaf hammered glass chargers, we were able to make a harmonious blend of Middle Eastern artistry.  And the best thing of all ... it was all right here in the warehouse!

Here are a few pictures of our finished table at the Cancer League's Valentine's Ball, Redding Holiday Inn.

Arabian Nights

We're working on a table for the Heart Association dinner tomorrow night.  The event is "Night of a Thousand Lights, and we're working on a table entitled "Arabian Nights."
It''s fun working with the bright and bold, exotic Moroccan colors -- orange, peacock blue, gold and the richest of plums.  Luckily we have such a diverse selection of rentals ... the perfume bottles, jewelry (draping the center glass vase), rentals and most of the props came out of inventory!

Olivarez Honeybees Hobbyist Day

It's time to plan those spring events, and weddings aren't the only events in the works for Party Dogs.  We are a full-service business event planner and party rental company as well, and many of our events occur annually throughout the north state.

One of our favorites is the Olivarez Honeybees Hobbyist Beekeeper Day.  This year's event is planned for Saturday, April 13, 2013, and it includes a full day of demonstrations, beekeeping vendors, speakers and food.

This event has been taking place for the last several years, and without a doubt, it gets better every year.  With a great tent from All American Tents already in place, Salvagno's Party Dogs staff arrives early the morning of the event to set up tables and chairs, linens, tent decorations, and flowers, leaving the staff at Olivarez Honeybees free to handle setting up their vendor booths and sales areas.

The day goes quickly, and is fun for all.  Here are a few photos from last's year's Hobby Day.

If you are interested in exploring beekeeping as a hobby, this is a great place to get all the information you need.  Package bees are available, along with a chance to talk to beekeepig professionals.  Pre-registration is required, so give them a call at Olivarez Honeybees in Orland, (530) 865-4717!

And if you are planning a business or coporate event in 2013, we are here to help!  With experienced event planners, event decorators, party rental experts and florists right here on staff, we can plan the best business event you have ever hosted.  Just imagine that ... we do what we do best, so you can focus on what you do best -- we make you look good.

'TIS THE SEASON TO BE PLANNING!

WOW!  The holidays are over and "Love is in the Air!"  Or, at least that's how it seems!

Newly engaged couples are planning their big day ... and thanks to this website, the phones are ringing off the hook and I think I might need to put in a "take-a-number" machine at the store!

It's so exciting to speak to each and every bride-to-be about her great plans.  I love this job!

The recurring theme seems to still be "Vintage," and I'm sure glad we have such a tremendous inventory of shabby-chic including components for centerpieces, picture wall, vanities and hutches, and on, and on.  Takes a bit of space in the warehouse, but when you put it together with an eclectic mix of old and new, you get an incredible blend of who you are.

I'm working on a new menu item that will offer a collection of our vintage pieces, all in one place.  From burlap to lace, chandeliers to candelabra, crystal to rusty tin, seeing it all together will be fun and is sure to spark the imagination.  Be sure to check back!

In the meantime ... we're booking fast!  If you want to be sure to get what you want, be sure and give us a call!

Vintage Audubon at Skylake Gardens

JUST IN!  New pictures by Chameleon Photographix of a special wedding last summer at Skylake Gardens.  the bride and her mother were very intimately involved in the design of this wedding, with nature being a recurring theme throughout.  Birds, bird cages, bird nests and other botanical accents were carried throughout the event decor.  Even the ceremonial gazebo brought in a bit of mother nature.  Built by the father of the bride, it was constructed of natural birch and decorated with fresh flowers by Salvagno's.  Take a look at our photo gallery listed on the website entitled "Vintage Audubon!"

FEATHER RIVER HOSPITAL ANNUAL GALA
We had the privilege of joining in with the volunteers who participated in the Feather River Hospital annual gala last weekend, which was staged at the Paradise Elk's Lodge.  The planning committee selected a combination of burgundy and gold, which was perfectly accented with our crystal chandeliers centered on two oversize gossamer drapes.  We added richly dramatic wall uplighting in crimson red -- the pictures just don't do this one justice!

For eight years now, Salvagno's has been privileged to work with US Bank to produce their annual "Customer Appreciation" event under the Sundial Bridge.  Every year we engage a different theme, and we've found creative ways to carry the theme from Broadway, to Italian, to Oriental, to James Bond.  Above are photos from 2008, with the theme "A Night in Venice," where we emphasized a "harlequin" look with black lace and linens, embelished masks, and lots of candlelight.

Cirque du Bebe'

Cirque du Bebe bearI LOVE THIS JOB!  Take a peek at what we are working on this weekend ... "Cirque du Bebe!"  We're having a ball working with Jan Skipitis again.  We did her daughter, Alexis', wedding a couple of years ago at Riverview Country Club (see "Amber Elegance") and now we're back at Riverview for the baby shower for Alexis and Baby Avery.

Thanks to Charlotte Turner for her creative talents in designing "Petula," our greeter bear.  Kurt's been working on her unicycle, now I've got to finish painting it ... and LOTS of glitter!

The umbrellas are the centerpieces.  They're frilled with glitter, feathers and lots of puffy paint. Each will be suspended upside-down over a guest table.

I can't wait to see it all come together!

CAL EXPO 2013 GLENN COUNTY GOLD?

We are currently in the "frenzy" of Cal Expo 2013.  This year's theme is "Glenn County -- Land of Milk and Honey" with a the center of the exhibit being a giant bee skep.  Here are a couple of pictures!

And just to refresh your memory, here is the post from Glenn County Gold 2012:

We have finally returned from Cal Expo, and building the Glenn County exhibit for the state fair.  Over 400,000 visitors went to the state fair, and most wouldn't miss the California Building where California counties put on their best.

If you've ever seen the California Building, you will agree that the exhibits are spectacular.  I see it as a mix of Disneyland, the Farmer's Market, and the Visitor's Bureau.  The goal of each exhibit is to share information about what their county has to offer, thus encouraging future visits (and migration!) to the county by those who experience the booth.

In order to understand our excitement in the awards the booth received, you have to understand that most of these booths are constructed by professional designers and builders, who live in and around Sacramento, who have, in many instances, a "very generous" budget supported by counties that have a high concentration of tourism-based dollars to spend.  Glenn County doesn't have that luxury as our economic structure is agricultural-based, and our population is small.  Nevertheless, we want to look good, and hope to attract attention to the many attributes of our county in the hopes of gaining understanding of who we are, where we are, and what we have to offer.  To reap the rewards of tourism dollars, home sales to families migrating to our area, and pride in who we are, you must sow the seeds of imagination, ingenuity, and, most of all, participation!  If you don't go and show, no one will know!

The booths are judged by 5 appointed judges, who review your "build" and award a rosette based on a point system that, in all honesty, I don't fully understand.  Nevertheless, you work your hardest and do your best to reach over-the-top in each and every category, thus assuring a good showing in the end.  In addition to the Gold, Silver, Bronze and Honorable Mention awards, there are a few "Special Awards" handed out to booths who are "The Best of the Best" in certain categories. Some of these include Best Design, Best Content, Best Marketing, Best Use of Produce and Artifacts, Best Craftsmanship, and Best Animation.  These coveted awards are very, very hard to get.

This year, Glenn County was awarded a Gold Medal, along with the Special Award for Best Animation.  In excess of 1,000 hours were put into this exhibit, with conceptualization occurring over the course of an entire year, and final construction being complete and ready for judging on July 11th.

This is Salvagno's and Party Dogs! 9th year of producing the Glenn County exhibit.  We have been able to take home the gold for 6 of those years, and silver for three.  We have won Best Use of Produce and Artifacts, Best Craftsmanship, and Best Animation, but without a doubt, this was our best exhibit ever.  Hats off to Clint and Kurt for having bringing it all to life by mastering the challenge of exhibit animation.

The construction of this exhibit takes a toll, and is very taxing on our staff and operations.  We have a business to run, and Sacramento is a long way from Orland, especially when we drive "gas hogs" in order to pull trailers, and gas is around $4 per gallon.  Once we leave for Sacramento with a hodge-podge collection of booth components, scaffolding, saws, drills, machining lathes, flowers, fabrics, paints, coffee pot, ice chests, microwave ... the list is endless, we don't come back (or sleep!), for about 10 days.  We set up shop (no, I really mean it ... we set up a workshop that would put any large-scale contractor to shame!), we don't leave our "space" or the California Building unoccupied.  We work in 12 - 16 hour shifts, only briefly stopping on occasion to take a nap on a cot tucked away behind the exhibit, "nuke" something to eat in the microwave, or run back to the motel to grab a shower and few minutes rest in a communal motel room shared by all 6 of us!

If there were ever a good concept for a reality show in Glenn County ... this is it!

Tempers get high ... after all, we are all related, and who can you say what you think to, if it is not your brother?!  Alas, at times you have to let it all out, but we always "kiss and make up."  We have amazed and alarmed our co-builders and the Cal Expo directors with our makeshift shops and dazzling props.  We are always the last one to leave the building ... and as with events, there is always the pressure hanging over your head of a looming deadline.  We just don't quit, and there is ALWAYS something more I would have done, had I had time!  It's been close, but we always make it.

In the end, I guess it is worth it.  People ask me, "Why?"  I don't really know the answer to that question, other than to say, "It is what we do," and believe me, it is not for the money.  We live to put up a spectacular show, just to tear it down a short time later!  In short, we live for the "Moment!,"  That moment is when the newly married bride and groom walk through that door for the first time and see what we have done for them.  It is when Mom and Dad have tears in their eyes as their daughter takes the dance floor with her new husband for the first time ... under the spectacular lighting of our dance floor decor.  It is for the "Wow!s" and the "Thank You!s" and the hugs of appreciation.

And with Cal Expo, it is for the squeal of a little girl as she rounded the corner, in unison with the scream of a little boy.  Breaking free of their mother's hand, they exclaimed:  "Mommy ... look at the butterflies!" ... and "Mommy ... look at the treehouse!"  They literally ran to the Glenn County booth ... past all those others without a pause.

And for a moment, we -- Glenn County, Salvagno's, and me -- were "Special."

PS:  Thank you to all who made the team effort to produce this Gold Medal exhibit, including Bill and Joan, Kurt, Clint and Billy Salvagno, our families who support us and who are left back at home to keep the fires burning (and the business running!), and our incredibly talented staff:  Jim, Courtney, Sara, Lea, Allison, Annette, Camille, Catalina, Cecilia, Cristina, Kaila, Kimmie, Lorena, Melissa and Tayne,  Special thanks go out to Gary Goings for his part in the final stages of completion of the exhibit, James and Theresa of All American Tents for saving us with a very necessary, and very functional, tent to house the construction project, Scotty's Electric Motor Repair for saving our bacon when the animation motor went out the first day, Jenniffer Cannizzaro, who oversees the project for the County of Glenn, the the many citizens of our communities who worked as docents in the booth during the term of the fair.  And most of all, thank you to the County of Glenn (and especially Supervisor John Viegas who attended the awards ceremony), for supporting this marketing project.
